Tomorrow's Business Parks: Highly connected parks are on the cards

On 25 April BEP held a colloquium on the challenges for the business parks of the future.

CREATING “HIGHLY CONNECTED” BUSINESS PARKS

Various initiatives from Namur and throughout Wallonia to take up the technical and economic challenges of developing a new generation of business parks were presented in one very busy morning. This gathering was organised with the support of Maxime Prévot, Wallonia’s minister in charge of business & science parks.

BEP has already taken several steps to meet qualitative targets in the areas of connectivity, water management, energy and the circular economy, and to achieve the goal set out in the Marshall Plan 4.0, that is creating “highly connected” business parks.

REFORM OF THE LEGISLATIVE FRAMEWORK

Maxime Prévot, the Walloon minister in charge of business & science parks, is the man behind a reform of the legislative framework regarding the infrastructure of a new generation of business parks 4.0. During the colloquium he presented the major highlights of this reform: the framework for expanding the parks (multi-annual investment plan, new subsidy rules, reporting, etc.) and the challenges to meet, especially those of specialisation, connectivity, and sustainability.

THEMES TAKEN UP

To illustrate the steps taken by BEP to meet these targets, the following themes were presented by a series of BEP’s partners:
• enterprise networks as actors of sustainable development;
• development of the optic fibre;
• opportunities for using electricity and CNG in company fleets;
• water seepage problems and promoting wildlife in business parks;
• heating grids and the circular economy to help businesses.

AND TOMORROW? WHAT LIES IN STORE?

BEP is planning to create 250 hectares of new business park sites. That means that the challenges outlined during the colloquium are already very present in the ongoing thinking and certain steps have already been taken to meet them when conditions allow it.
When it comes to existing business parks, re-qualification operations will be planned to improve the quality of their infrastructure, to benefit the businesses themselves.
